Berlin in the European Union
With the extension of the European Union (EU), and especially the addition of Poland and the Czech Republic, Berlins geo-political location will become even more significant. Utilising this fact is a major task of Berlins policies on Europe. Five representatives from Berlin are in the European Parliament. The Governing Mayor and the Berlin Europe Delegate represent the federal state in the EU regional council. Since reunification, Berlin has received considerable financial benefits from the EU. Between 1994 and 1999, the city received 2.2 billion DM in subsidies from the EU structural fund. Further subsidies are also assured for the period from 2000 to 2006. |
