Churches and religious organisations
There
are a wide variety of religious organisations in the city. Almost
half of the people of Berlin are members of a religious organisation.
According to a survey by the Statistical Office of Berlin, the religious
organisations in Berlin reported a total membership of 1.48 million
in 1998. Almost 40 per cent of the population claim allegiance to
the Christian faith. In 1998, 25.4 per cent of the people of Berlin
belonged to the main Protestant church and 9.2 per cent to the Roman
Catholic Church. The Islamic communities had almost 200,000 members,
mainly of Turkish origin, which represents six per cent of the total
population. About 12,000 people belonged to the Jewish religious
communities in Berlin. There are also members of numerous other
religious organisations, including Hindu and Buddhist organisations.
